THE CANCAFE IN THE INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT

The coffee is the second product of the world-wide economy, after petroleum and occupies million producing families. The economies of some of the poorest countries of the world to a great extent depend on the production and the commerce of the coffee.

From the rupture in the agreements of the Organization the International of the Coffee - OIC in 1989, between producing and consuming countries, no longer exist control mechanisms of supply and demand of the coffee, settling down the free market. From 1999 one denotes on supply of the coffee and a growth of stocks that determine the fall of the prices; which causes a world-wide crisis of the coffee, that continues affecting our sector.

The activities that include the production, industrialization and commercialization of the coffee in the Andean Community of Nations -CAN, are an important contribution to the economy of the Countries Members and basic sustenance of a numerous sector of their population with limited resources. It exists near a million producing families of coffee in the CAN, who face a changing future and stranger, whom the incorporation of an integral vision requires to face world-wide the coffee crisis.

In the search of viable and integral proposals the unions of producers of Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador approached and made several interchanges of experiences between producers and leaders of Andean coffee organizations (May 1999, June 2000, September 2000, May 2001, November 2002).

Between the most excellent profits of the CANCAFE it is possible to emphasize:
•The signature of the resolution 554 with which it was impelled in October of the 2001 conformation of the Group Ad Hoc of the chain of the coffee of the CAN, made up of representatives of the CANCAFE, representatives of the governments and the private sector of each one of the countries members of the CAN.
•Through the Group Ad Hoc of the chain of the coffee, the elaboration and presentation of the "Andean Program of chain sustainable, competitive and integrated coffee (WP - Board 941/03)", to the Organization the International of the Coffee - OIC.
